Our community and social impact

Who we are

Shea Care is a Ugandan range of skin and hair care natural products.  We believe in  the sustainable harvesting of the shea nut to make products that are healthy, safe and enhance the wellbeing of all our customers.

We believe in supporting and creating a positive social impact in the community where the shea nut is harvested and in aiding the conservation effort of Shea Nut Tree and other indigenous trees in the region.

Our focus is to encourage more people to get involved in contributing to our social responsibility activities that will support the uplifting of people in those areas and also ensure the preservation of the trees.

Our Community

From East to West Africa, 80% of the shea butter industry is managed by women, with 16 million+ women in rural areas involved in collection and processing either as individuals or in groups.

In Uganda this is closer to 90%.  The industry is the backbone of employment and financial income for many impoverished communities, enabling women to gain a sense of independence and the ability to uplift themselves and their families.

Furthermore, Mohca Beauty & Skincare Limited, under which SheaCare trades, is a wholly Ugandan and female owned business.

The Story of Shea Butter

From Source to Skin

Shea butter is a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea tree which grows naturally in the shea belt that is only found in the SubSaharan plains of Africa.

In Uganda our trees are found in east and northern parts of the country producing the variety of shea butter known as Vitellaria Nilotica. We use only the finest Ugandan Shea Butter (Vitellaria Nilotica) in all of our products.

The Shea Tree blossoms and fruits only once a year.  Indigenous groups of women collect the nuts, sun dry and then prepare them for processing into the butter that we know and love.   Traditionally the butter would be pounded and heated to extract the oil, however these days it is cold pressed to maintain its nutritive integrity and its suitability for the skin  and hair care industry.

These elements are what produce therapeutic moisturizing and lubricating properties for the skin.  Oleic acid is a naturally occurring glyceride of oleic acid.

The result is that Vitellaria Nilotica shea butter is both softer, lighter and creamier in texture.  It has a lower melting point at which it is absorbed into the skin.  In addition, the aroma is slightly nutty.
